Product Info
Soft enough that you’ll keep touching it while you work. Our chenille is a plush, velvety yarn with a rounded pile that hides uneven tension and makes even a first attempt look intentional.
It’s the most finished-looking yarn we make. Straight off the hook it reads as something you’d buy — which is why chunky chenille is the yarn we use in our own chunky crochet kits.
Best for: cushion covers, throws, plush makes, baskets, and the soft sections of a woven hanging.
What Is Chenille Yarn?
What is chenille?
Chenille is French for caterpillar, which tells you most of what you need to know. Short fibres are bound around a twisted core, so the strand ends up soft, fuzzy and round — closer to velvet rope than to classic spun wool.
What’s it like to work with?
Plush and slightly springy, with no scratch to it at all. Because the pile hides small differences in tension, your stitches look more even than they probably are — which is very good news if you’re new to this.
What can I make with it?
Anything you want to touch. Cushion covers, throws, plush makes, baskets, coasters, and the softer sections of a woven wall hanging. It’s the most finished-looking yarn in our range straight off the hook.
Washing & Care
Hand wash cold, and wash dark colours on their own.
Dry flat, never in a tumble dryer. Lay it on a towel and reshape it while it’s damp.
Don’t iron it. These are synthetic yarns — a hot iron will flatten the pile permanently and can glaze the fibre. If something needs relaxing, steam it from a distance with the iron never touching the surface.
They don’t block like wool. Wet-blocking works because wool holds a shape. Synthetics don’t have that memory, so what comes off your hook is essentially what you’ve got. Worth knowing before you plan something that depends on precise finished dimensions.
On pilling: any soft synthetic pile will pill where it rubs. On a cushion or a throw that’s normal wear, and a fabric shaver takes it straight off.

Craft Club Yarn
Why You'll Love Our Yarn
🧶 Built For Big Hooks
Every yarn in this range works at 9mm and up. Bigger stitches are easier to see, easier to count, and quicker to finish — which is why chunky yarn is where almost everyone should start.
🎨 A Range That Matches Itself
The colours are chosen to sit next to each other, so you can mix textures across all four yarns in one project and it will look beautiful!
🪝 Forgiving To Learn On
Chunky stitches are big enough to see and easy to count, and the plush textures hide small differences in tension — so your first attempt looks better than you'd expect.
🛋️ Made To Be Lived With
These are yarns for the home. Cushions, throws, wall hangings and baskets that hold up to being sat on, wrapped in and actually used — not put away in a drawer.
Lovely question — it comes down to how you want the finished thing to feel.
Chenille — the softest and the most polished-looking. Cushions, throws, plush makes. The safest first choice.
Feather — pure, glorious texture. Perfect for fringe, tassels and shaggy woven rows, and lovely held alongside a smooth yarn.
Popcorn — bobbles built right into the strand. Statement texture on smaller pieces.
Twisted Chunky — the biggest and the fastest. Big cosy things, and the most forgiving to learn on.
Still deciding? Go with Chenille. Chunky chenille is the yarn we use in our own chunky crochet kits, so we know it inside out.
Is this yarn beginner-friendly?
Yes! Chunky yarn is really the loveliest place to start. Big stitches are easy to see, easy to count, and easy to fix while you’re still learning — which makes the whole thing far more fun.
If it’s your very first project, we’d hand you Chenille or Twisted Chunky. They’re soft, forgiving and they grow fast, so you get that lovely “look what I made” moment quickly.
How many balls will I need?
A few! Our jumbo yarns are short and thick by design — Twisted Chunky is 20m a ball and Popcorn is 25m — so a cushion cover is a handful of balls rather than one.
Planning something specific? Email hello@craftclubco.com and we’ll happily work out the numbers with you. We love this bit.
What hook or needle should I use?
Chenille is happiest on a 9mm. Feather, Popcorn and Twisted Chunky love a 12–15mm.
Think of those as starting points rather than rules. If your fabric feels stiff, go up a size. If it feels loose and floppy, go down one. You’ll find your favourite very quickly.
Will the colour look like it does on my screen?
Very close! Every screen renders colour a little differently, and no photo quite captures how a textured yarn looks in real life.
We shoot every colour under the same neutral light and never colour-correct, so what you’re seeing is as true as we can make it. If you have an exact shade in mind, order a single ball first and see it in your own space — it usually looks even better in person.
Can I put my finished piece in the washing machine?
Hand washing is the way to go with these — cool water, dry flat, and skip the tumble dryer and the iron. It takes five minutes and keeps your piece looking brand new for years.
A chunky synthetic make holds a lot of water, so lay it flat on a towel and gently reshape it while it’s damp rather than hanging it up. It’ll dry back into exactly the shape you made it.
Is it safe for babies and kids?
These yarns aren’t tested or certified for infant use, so we’d keep them out of cots and away from toys for under-threes — the soft pile on chenille and feather can shed.
For a nursery cushion, a wall hanging or anything that lives happily up out of reach, they’re absolutely gorgeous.
