Why We'll Never Use AI In Our Designs

If you've ever wondered how a Craft Club design comes to life, here's the honest answer: by hand, pixel by pixel, by real people — no generative AI involved, ever.

It's always been true about how we work, but we've never actually written it down. A community member recently asked us where we stand on AI, and it made us realise: this deserves saying out loud.

What is Generative AI?

Generative Artificial Intelligence (commonly referred to as Gen AI) creates new content (like written text, music, and art) that digitally imitates human creation.

It works by analysing patterns from what is available on the Internet by human creators. Something that could take you hours can now take just the click of a button. That doesn't sound so bad, right?

Except to do this, Generative AI needs training. And it was trained on writings, music, and art without the consent of the original creators

A small team, a lot of hand-drawing

Small but mighty, our design team consists of three members based in Sydney, where every single one of our designs is meticulously drawn and pixelated by hand.

  • No AI generating our source material
  • No AI "assisting" our drafts
  • No shortcuts

We're real artists creating human-made art!

Why it matters to us

Our founder puts it best:

"I feel really strongly about not using generative AI in design because I've had my own artwork stolen multiple times by large companies, and it's absolutely heartbreaking. By coming up with our own moodboards and hand-drawing everything ourselves, we're ensuring our designs are 100% our own."

Nakisah Williams, Craft Club's Founder

That experience shapes everything about how we create. We build our own moodboards from scratch and draw every design ourselves — which means when you buy something from Craft Club, you can be confident it's genuinely, entirely ours.

We think it makes for better design, too

Beyond the principle of it, we just believe hand-crafted design is better design. Every piece we make starts with the craft itself and the person who'll experience it in mind — and that's something we don't think AI can replicate.

Part of our DNA

Not using AI has always felt so core to who we are that it never occurred to us to say it explicitly. But our customers deserve to know, so now it's official: at Craft Club, every design is 100% human-made, start to finish.

Thanks for asking the question that got us to put this in writing.

No Generative AI is used in our designs.

We single-handedly know the pain of stolen work – we won't be a part of it.
